Youth, Business and Community Internship Tips for Participants

Company Expectations

Internship Student

  • Comply with the company’s policies and procedures
  • Observe the same regulations that apply to other employees
  • Adhere to all policies and regulations set forth by the school district and YBC Internship Coach

Internship Company/Organization

  • Recognize that student is enrolled in YBC Internship program
  • Provide a “safe” workplace
  • Adhere to wage/hour, child labor, and all other federal, state and local laws pertaining to student employment
  • Provide an overview of company’s structure, mission/purpose and employee handbook
  • Discuss company’s policies regarding:
    • Hours of operation/work
    • Overtime if applicable
    • Vacation policy
    • Acceptable dress & appearance
    • Cell phone usage-appropriate/not appropriate
    • Safety rules
    • Emergency procedures
    • Absentee procedures
    • Days off
    • Parking
    • Arrival/Departure procedures
    • Breaks-lunch, personal break
      • Presence of food at work
    • Work schedules
    • Pay period
    • Introduce training sponsor/mentor
    • Introduce co-workers
  • Provide company tour

Job/Position Expectations

Internship Student

  • Follow all operational and workplace guidelines
  • Complete all assigned work tasks in a timely manner and with quality
  • Know who to contact when you have a question or need guidance


Internship Company/Organization

  • Adhere to child labor laws regarding hazardous equipment
  • Provide job/position orientation/training
  • Show where to report and to whom
  • Describe student’s responsibilities
  • Explain why responsibilities are important to the company
  • Explain and demonstrate how to maintain the premises & workstation
  • Explain and model how to interact with customers
  • Provide supervision, instruction, and feedback regarding each assigned task
